I am so proud of myself, my crab apple jelly is made and has set. my recipe, yesterday I washed , top and tailed and cut in half the crab apples, filled the duo pot half way up , put in 3cups of water and cooked for 12 minutes. Poured the contents in to a jelly bag hanging over an upturned small table with a container underneath to catch the juice left over night and this morning I had 2pints of juice. poured juice back in to duo pot , and for every pint of juice I added 300 grams of sugar. Set pot to sauté stirred the sugar to dissolve and boiled it for 25 minutes. I had a sugar thermometer in the pan and it was at 220 degrees after the25 minutes. so poured into my sterilised jars. Cost of making this crab apple jelly was 8 pence as I checked the smart meter before and after I finished.
The left over crab apple jelly in the jug I am going to have on toast this morning when it’s cooled down.
Although pride is sometimes a sin, I think it justifiable in this instance.
I am well impressed, Linda!
I have frozen apples, cut slice and core put in to freezer bags and freeze, The crab apple jelly will last in the fridge for three weeks or the freezer for twelve months if wrapped in parchment paper and then wrapped tightly in foil. In my jars they will go in a cool dark dry place . Until I open them then in the fridge for use.
Have you ever tried freezing apples, I was wondering if I could freeze some that we have to use in November for Thanksgiving. I don't know if it would be better to cut and slice them and freeze them raw or if I should make them into pie filling and freeze the pie filling
It looks great, how long do you think it will last unopened?
Yummy it looks good
